Porkbun’s 4 Million Domains: A Victory for the Long Tail

I have seen enough registrar milestones to know that domain volume is often a vanity metric, usually inflated by a few massive domainers holding portfolios they will never develop. But Porkbun just hit a number that actually makes me lean in.

The team at Porkbun recently announced they have surpassed 4 million domains under management. While the headline focuses on the 4 million mark, the secondary figure is what caught my eye: those domains are spread across more than 750,000 customers. In an industry where a few whales often account for the bulk of the registrations, seeing an average of roughly five domains per customer is a refreshing indicator of a healthy, diversified user base.

The Math of Modern Registration

In my two decades in this business, I have watched registrars chase volume at the expense of stability. If your entire growth strategy relies on ten guys in a dark room flipping expiring .coms, you are one policy change away from a revenue collapse. Porkbun has taken the harder path—building a brand that resonates with individual developers, small business owners, and creative professionals who actually intend to use the DNS records they are paying for.

This matters because high-volume, low-margin domainers are notoriously fickle. They move for a nickel. A customer base of three-quarters of a million people, however, represents a massive community of intent. These are users who are likely looking for hosting, SSL certificates, and email services. They represent a sustainable ecosystem rather than a transient inventory of digital real estate.

It is also a testament to the power of personality in a commodity market. Selling a .net is, mechanically, the same everywhere. But Porkbun has managed to make the process feel less like a bureaucratic chore and more like a deliberate choice by leaning into a specific, quirky identity that clearly scales.

I suppose it helps when your mascot is a pig and you aren't afraid to use a pun, though I still maintain that no amount of clever branding can save a bad UI.

Why the Long Tail Wins

As the hosting world continues to consolidate, the value of the "long tail" only increases. Having 4 million domains is a nice feather in the cap, but having 750,000 people who trust you with their primary identity is a moat. It is much harder for a competitor to chip away at 750,000 individual relationships than it is to poach one large portfolio with a better bulk discount.

Porkbun is proving that you can build a massive business by focusing on the small guy. In a sea of corporate sameness, being the registrar people actually like is a hell of a strategy.
