We have spent the last decade arguing about the definition of the edge. For most, it was just a CDN node or a smaller rack in a secondary tier city. But the reality of infrastructure is shifting toward a much more fundamental requirement: power that doesn't rely on a fragile, centralized grid.
The latest signal in this shift comes from Antares, which recently closed a $470 million funding round to develop small modular reactors for the U.S. military. We aren't talking about the massive cooling towers of the 1970s. These are micro-reactors designed to output between 100 kW and 1 MW—roughly the size of a shipping container—destined for Air Force bases that need to stay online regardless of what happens to the civilian utility lines.
The Sovereignty of the Megawatt
In the hosting world, we’ve always been at the mercy of the local utility. You pick your data center based on PUE, tax incentives, and fiber paths, but the power itself is usually a given until it isn't. The military is simply the first mover here because their uptime requirements are a matter of national security, not just an SLA credit. When you can drop a 1 MW power plant onto a remote site, the entire math of where you can place compute changes.
For the broader industry, this is the logical conclusion of the micro-data center trend. If these reactors become commercially viable outside of defense contracts, the idea of a "sovereign cloud" takes on a literal meaning. You’re no longer just owning the stack; you’re owning the electrons. For providers, solving the power bottleneck is the only way to keep up with the insatiable demand for GPU density and localized AI processing.
I look forward to the first colocation provider that lists "Nuclear-as-a-Service" on their features page, right next to the managed backups and the free migration services.
Computing Without the Cord
The transition from massive, centralized infrastructure to distributed, resilient nodes is the only way forward. Antares is proving that the most important hardware in the rack might eventually be the one producing its own fuel.
